Arizona parents arrested after 3-year-old dies of fentanyl overdose

On June 14, the two parents, identified as Shala Durham, 33, and Ryan Konkol, 37, and the child fell asleep in the living room at around 10 p.m.

Police wrote in a probable cause statement included in court documents that Durham placed her purse, which contained a small bag of pills, on the kitchen table shortly before she went to sleep.

The next morning, the couple awoke to find a red-colored foam coming from the boy's mouth and his body was stiff, according to court documents. Konkol told police he woke up to Durham screaming that the child died and would not wake up, according to the probable cause statement.

Officers interviewed the parents and called detectives to the scene after they noticed discrepancies in their recounting of what happened and the condition of the body, according to court documents.

Police found drug paraphernalia, including burnt tin foil and white pills during a search of the home, records detailed.

Durham also had clear signs of impairment and was unable to provide a linear story. Both parents admitted to active illicit substance use.

Lab results showed that both Durham and Konkol tested positive for fentanyl and an autopsy of the child identified a \"lethal amount\" of fentanyl in his system, according to court documents. The pills were identified as alprazolam, which is a benzodiazepine.

Durham and Konkol's bail was set to $500,000 each. Their preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 31.
